In the last century, average sleep duration in the developed world has declined by more than one hour per night. During deep slow-wave sleep, the brain activates the glymphatic system: a network of channels that flushes toxic waste products, including amyloid-beta and tau proteins associated with Alzheimer’s disease, from brain tissue. This process does not occur during wakefulness. It cannot be replicated during light sleep. Only deep, uninterrupted slow-wave sleep provides this function.
During REM sleep, the brain processes emotional experience, consolidates procedural and emotional memory, and restores the neurochemical balance necessary for emotional regulation and stress resilience. REM sleep is heavily weighted toward the second half of the night, meaning that cutting sleep short by even one or two hours disproportionately reduces REM.
